Chances are very good that you are reading this article on some sort of screen, quite possibly a phone. According to a study done by RescueTime in 2019, globally, our phones are used on average 3.25 hours a day and checked a whopping 58 times daily. Our cellular phones are everything: our phones, our maps, our planners, our social outlets, our digital assistants, and probably one of the largest media outlets most people interact with daily. According to an article published by Marketwatch in 2018, the total time an average American spends on ALL types of screens is up to over 11 hours! This number is up an hour and a half from 9 hours and 32 minutes just four years ago. Doing the math on these statistics is mind-numbing. If you sleep eight hours a night, then you are awake for 16 hours. Of the time that most people are awake, chances are good you are staring at a screen for 11 of the 16 hours. This is nearly 70% of your day staring at a screen – 70% of your life!
You have to wonder though, if all this technology is supposed to make life easier and help people feel more connected, then why after 11 hours of staring at screens every day do people feel disconnected, pressed for time, and stressed? Why then according to one study done by Stylus.com are 93% of Americans concerned about the technology’s potential to spread misinformation? Why are people craving more non-screen time? Heck, why are companies, like Facebook and Apple now telling the user how much time they are spending on their screens? Does this help their business or do they know this isn’t actually good for us?
With all this time that we are spending on our screens is there any reason to worry there’s a subsequent negative impact on us? Are the reports that screen time is linked to anxiety and depression to be taken seriously? Should we worry that the dopamine created on social media from positive affirmation of our posts is making us addicted to social media? Do we, as humans, crave more?
We at Eloros think you could use LESS screen time and want to see you out in nature, collaborating with real humans, and, just possibly finding a hidden treasure.
